David likes puzzles. Before becoming a financial planner, he spent twenty years doing research in artificial intelligence and computer security. That experience shapes his approach to planning: examine the assumptions, consider what could change, and explain the reasoning behind a recommendation.
He describes this work as professional worrying. He considers the personal and economic events that could affect a client’s plans, then works with the client to decide which risks to take and how to prepare.
David founded Pathfinder in 2003 because he saw a need for financial advice that was both technically rigorous and free from product commissions. He wanted the research to help clients make decisions they could understand and carry out.
He has developed educational material for other advisors through NAPFA, spoken at national and regional conferences, and continued to study retirement, investment risk, taxes, and estate planning. He is particularly interested in how a decision in one area affects the others.
David was raised in Hawaii and graduated from Punahou School. Outside the office, he enjoys hiking, camping, kayaking, golf, scuba diving, reading, and time with family and friends.
Pathfinder Financial Services, LLC is organized in Hawaii and is a Registered Investment Advisor in the State of Hawaii. The practice also serves clients elsewhere in the United States where permitted.
